Actinic
Keratosis
What is
actinic keratosis?
Actinic keratosis is a
precancerous lesion of the epidermis that is caused by long
term exposure to sunlight. They are not life threatening as
long as they are diagnosed and treated in the early stages.
Symptoms
- Areas of the skin
become scaly, rough, discolored, and sometimes tender to
the touch.
- AKs are most commonly
found on sun exposed areas such as the face, lips, ears,
neck, scalp, forearms, and backs of hands.
- People with fair skin
and light hair and eyes or those who are
immunosuppressed are at the greatest risk of developing
AKs.
Treatment
- Treatment may vary
based on location and size of the lesion, and the number
of lesions you have developed. Your age and general
health will also be taken into consideration.
- Treatment options
include freezing with liquid nitrogen, topical
chemotherapy creams, photodynamic therapy, chemical
peels, and laser resurfacing.
- Information obtained
from the American Cancer Society.
