Moles What are Moles? Moles appear anywhere on the skin. Sun exposure increases the number of moles. Each mole has its own growth pattern. Moles range in color from tan, pink, brown, or black. Recent studies have found that certain type of moles have a greater than average chance of developing into malignant melanoma (skin cancer):- Sunburns increase risks of cancer.
- More moles than average (greater than 100), increase risks.
- Moles present at birth in about 1 in 100 people have a greater risk than moles developed after birth.
- Larger moles with uneven color and irregular shape increase risk.
