How Can I Reduce Stretch Marks?

The appearance of stretch marks is something that affects most women and some men in their lifetime. Our doctors receive a lot of questions about stretch marks, such as:

  • What are stretch marks?
  • Are there treatment options for stretch marks?

WHAT ARE STRETCH MARKS?

stretch marks

As stretch marks occur, red or purple lines start to mark the skin. Over time, these lines will fade to a silver color. Stretch marks usually occur on the inner thigh, buttocks, back, breasts, stomach, or an individual’s underarms.

As an individual’s body changes, the skin can not grow as fast, which causes stretching. The stretching of the skin causes collagen to break down, exposing damaged blood vessels, and resulting in indented scarring.

Common causes of stretch marks include:

  • Weight gain and height: Anyone who rapidly gains weight or rapidly grows in height may get stretch marks.
  • Some forms of contraception: Taking certain forms of contraception can cause the user to gain weight. Gaining weight can cause stretch marks.
  • Pregnancy: As your child grows, so will your body. During this time, your hormones may surge causing skin fibers to weaken producing stretch marks.
  • Bodybuilding: When you bodybuild, your muscles may bulge causing your skin to expand and stretch marks to appear.

STRETCH MARK TREATMENT OPTIONS

There are a few different options for reducing stretch marks:

  • Micro-needling
  • Exercise and Weight Loss

Micro-needling (Eclipse MicroPen®)

Eclipse MicroPen® is the most advanced medical-grade automated micro-needling treatment that can reduce the appearance of stretch marks, acne scars, and much more.

Tiny needles create controlled micro-injuries to the skin to aid in the production of collagen and elastin. This results in a thicker epidermis with a softer appearance.

This 15 to 30 minute procedure is the safest and most effective micro-needling device available.

Exercise and Weight Loss

Having extra weight can make stretch marks more visible. For individuals who exercise and maintain a healthy weight, they may see their skin tighten and their stretch marks less noticeable.
