What is CoolSculpting®? Does it Really Work? (Spoiler Alert: It Does)

Everywhere you look, a different spa or wellness center is advertising a new treatment for fat loss. Creams, pills, cleanses — you name it, someone is selling it. And while one or two of the new solutions on the market may have potential, you know the vast majority are a complete scam. So, it’s understandable that you’re skeptical about CoolSculpting®.

As doctors, we’re incredibly selective about the new products and procedures that we offer in our office. We take great pride in only offering treatments that will get our patients the results they desire, researching and testing everything before it’s offered.

CoolSculpting® is the only FDA-cleared, non-surgical fat-freezing procedure. And it does work, which is why we’re proud to offer the treatment in our Morgantown, WV, office.

To learn more about the procedure and to find out if you may be a candidate, read on.

WHAT IS COOLSCULPTING®?

CoolSculpting® was developed when scientists at Harvard University —Dieter Manstein, MD, and R. Rox Anderson, MD—observed that when children ate popsicles, they got dimples in their cheeks. The dimples were a result of the popsicles freezing and eliminating the small pockets of fat cells in the child’s cheeks. From this discovery, the CoolSculpting® procedure was born.

It safely delivers controlled cooling to eliminate fat that an individual has a tough time losing through diet and exercise alone. The frozen fat cells become crystallized and die. Then, the dead fat cells are naturally processed and eliminated by your body.

As adults, we retain the same number of fat cells throughout our entire lives. When an individual goes on a weight loss program, these fat cells shrink to a smaller size. CoolSculpting® eliminates them—the results are long-term because once a fat cell is eliminated, it can not reproduce.

The procedure can reduce the number of fat cells an individual has by 20 to 25 percent and typically can take 30-60 minutes (depending on the number of treatment areas). It works for fat bulges in the submental area (area between neck and chin), thigh, abdomen and flank, bra fat, back fat and underneath the buttocks.

The Dermatology Center for Skin Health has the ability to treat in 1/2 the time (30 min. rather than 60 min. per treatment area)!

ARE YOU A CANDIDATE?

The CoolSculpting® procedure is not a weight loss solution such as gastric bypass. CoolSculpting® is designed for individuals who are within 20 percent of their ideal weight and want to eliminate fat bulges in specific areas.

Good candidates for the procedure have noticeable fat bulges in certain areas. Individuals who choose CoolSculpting® as an option are often looking for non-surgical alternatives to undergoing liposuction. It is not a treatment for obesity.

Unfortunately, the CoolSculpting® procedure is not for everyone. If you suffer from one of the following, you should not get the CoolSculpting® procedure done.

  •  Cryoglobulinemia
  •  Cold Agglutinin Disease
  •  Paroxysmal Cold Hemoglobinuria

WHAT DOES COOLSCULPTING® COST?

The price of CoolSculpting® can vary depending on the target area and the number of areas treated. Many of our patients opt for multiple treatments in order to completely achieve their goals.

We customize each treatment plan to ensure you get optimal results and feel more confident after the procedure is complete. A comprehensive cost analysis will be completed as part of your free initial consultation.

HOW LONG WILL I HAVE TO TAKE OFF FROM WORK?

No time at all! CoolSculpting® isn’t a surgical procedure and it isn’t invasive. Most of our patients return to work after their procedure, although some prefer to wear slightly looser clothing for the rest of the day.

You can immediately return to your normal activities. Any discomfort you experience during the procedure will quickly subside after the completion of the treatment.
