WHAT ARE CHEMICAL PEELS?
Chemical peels are procedures that entail a chemical solution to be applied to the skin, which exfoliates the skin, and effectively improves the appearance of the skin on your face, neck, chest or hands. The results are newer, healthier and brighter skin.
WHAT ARE CHEMICAL PEELS USED FOR?
- Precancerous skin cells (actinic keratosis)
- Sun-damaged skin
- Skin rejuvenation
- Skin tone and texture improvement
WHAT ARE DIFFERENT TYPES OF PEELS?
Types of peels vary based on type and concentration of acid/acids used in peels. Chemical Peels work at varying depths of the skin (light, medium or deep), depending on the desired result.Because every individual’s skin is unique, your dermatologist will determine the best peel for your skin. Each type of chemical peel uses a different chemical solution and produces individually distinctive outcomes.
BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER THE PROCEDURE
WHAT TO DO BEFORE A CHEMICAL PEEL?
Before the peel, schedule a consultation with your dermatologist as that will help determine what chemical peel is right for you. In addition, to reduce potential side effects and improve results, your dermatologist might recommend a pre-peel skin care regimen anti-photoaging system or brightening system for 2 to 4 weeks prior to their peel.
WHAT IS DONE DURING A CHEMICAL PEEL?
During a chemical peel, the skin is cleansed to remove the oils and debris off the skin. Next, a brush, cotton ball, gauze or sponge is used to apply a chemical solution. From there, your skin will begin to whiten, and you may feel mild stinging while the solution is on your skin. Then a neutralizer will be applied to remove the solution.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER A PEEL?
Skin peeling is mild to moderate and starts 2-3 days after the peel. Most individuals take 7- 10 days to completely peel. Because the skin is more sensitive during the healing period, it is recommended to use a post procedure kit that is a gentle cleanser, an antioxidant and physical sunblock.
Important note - Sun exposure and smoking after a chemical peel needs to be avoided. They can cause unwanted and prolonged side effects, including infection and scarring. To learn more about adverse side effects, click here.
