How Effective is Body Contouring and Is It Safe?

Sometimes, diet and exercise alone are not effective in helping you achieve the results you want — and that’s where body contouring comes in. Body contouring, also known as body sculpting, is a non-surgical way to shrink stubborn pockets of fat or tone problem areas to make them appear leaner.

With so many trending fads, many patients are understandably skeptical. The men and women we talk to wonder often whether body contouring works, and more importantly, is body contouring safe? Continue reading to learn about our answers to these common questions.

WHAT TYPES OF BODY CONTOURING TREATMENTS DO WE PROVIDE AT THE DERMATOLOGY CENTER FOR SKIN HEALTH, PLLC?

At the Dermatology Center for Skin Health, PLLC, we provide our patients with CoolSculpting® to help eliminate stubborn fat and Emsculpt® to improve muscle toning. At our practice in Morgantown, West Virginia, we encourage combination therapy to aid in the reduction of fat while building muscle. In addition, our Clinical Cosmetic Specialist will tailor our body contouring treatments to your body’s shape for the best possible results.

IS BODY CONTOURING EFFECTIVE?

Both Coolsculpting® and Emsculpt® or a combination thereof are effective solutions for many of our patients. But like any cosmetic treatment, results can vary based on the individual.

Let’s take a closer look at how body contouring works and the benefits of body contouring below:

Coolsculpting®

Coolsculpting® is the only FDA-approved, non-surgical, non-invasive, highly effective fat reduction process that uses a controlled cooling temperature, also known as cryolipolysis, to eliminate fat cells under the skin. The frozen fat cells become crystallized and die, and then, they are naturally processed and destroyed by the body. The surrounding tissue is not harmed.

Adults retain the same number of fat cells throughout their lives. When an individual goes on a weight loss program, those fat cells shrink. However, CoolSculpting® goes a step further and eliminates fat cells. CoolSculpting® results are long-term because once the fat cells are destroyed, they can not reproduce.

When considering CoolSculpting®, remember it is not a weight loss solution, like gastric bypass. Instead, CoolSculpting® is designed for individuals within 20 percent of their ideal weight who want to eliminate fat bulges in specific areas.

CoolSculpting® can reduce the number of fat cells an individual has by 20 to 25 percent. Individuals who receive CoolSculpting® treatments may see changes to their bodies within three weeks. Dramatic results are most visible at the two-month mark. Several months after, your body will continue to flush out fat cells.

Emsculpt®

Emsculpt® is an FDA-approved, non-invasive procedure that uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology to force your muscles to contract 20,000 times in just 20 to 30 minutes. As the muscle is exposed to these intense contractions, it is forced to adapt, resulting in burned fat and toned muscle.

When considering Emsculpt®, remember that mass and fat loss are not permanent, and Emsculpt® should not be a substitute for exercise. However, Emsculpt® is an effective body contouring treatment and an excellent way to strengthen weak muscles.

Patients may see Emsculpt® results last for approximately one year; however, our staff recommends receiving maintenance treatments. Typically, we recommend four Emsculpt® treatments within two weeks to give our patients the most optimal results, followed by one maintenance treatment per month.

Through 13 different studies, researchers found that patients who received four Emsculpt® treatments saw the following:

  • 19 percent reduction in fat
  • 16 percent increase in muscle mass
  • 96 percent satisfaction rate

IS BODY CONTOURING SAFE?

According to a report from the American Society of Aesthetic of Plastic Surgery, there were 169,695 non-surgical fat reduction procedures performed in 2016. Patients mainly reported mild, short-term side effects, such as redness, swelling and pain.

The body contouring treatments we offer here at The Dermatology Center for Skin Health, PLLC, are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, it is essential to remember that everyone’s body and medical history differ. Therefore, if you have questions about body contouring procedures, like CoolSculpting® or Emsculpt®, or wonder if you are a good candidate, you should speak with a qualified provider, like your dermatologist or other certified trained professional.
